If We Were Having Coffee: Snowmageddon

There’s nothing I love more than to sit back, have a cup of coffee, and chat. The last time we had coffee we talked about the weather. If we were having coffee, we’d talk about the weather again. I’d rather talk about the weather than the color of some dumb dress.

I live in north Louisiana. We don’t get really cold winters here so when we do get winter weather, it is a BIG deal.

Snotherners' Reaction to Snow

It’s funny ’cause it’s true.

Real snow is pretty awesome. I say real snow because we may get sleet and ice pellets, but real snow with flakes and the whole 9 is not something we get to experience often. So when it happens, it is major news.

February 25, 2015 from about 6 AM – afternoonish we got real snow. It was amazing.

Real LA Snow

No Photoshop. Those are real flakes!

Real LA Snow

Seriously, look at that!

Real LA Snow

And we were warm during Christmas. 😦

For a few hours it snowed like nobody’s business. I decided to go for a walk in the snow because why not. I saw some of the neighborhood boys playing in the snow.

They had no idea what they were doing.

They had no idea what they were doing.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you about the sweet boys in my neighborhood. By the time I saw these fellas, they were arguing about the snowman construction. There was still some animosity from the snow ball fight I didn’t see. Apparently, snowballs hurt and aren’t puffy like on TV. One of those boys wouldn’t stop throwing snow balls after they said stop so they kicked him out of the construction of the snowman. Can you guess the offender?

I enjoyed listening to the boys talk about how they were going to buy real boots, gloves, and a shovel. A couple of them didn’t have on gloves. It doesn’t always get cold enough here to buy gloves. One gloveless boy said that he believed his fingers were going to fall off and that must be how frostbite worked. Two of those boys were my former students (not the exiled one). They told me they had Googled how to build a snowman, and they were pretty proud of how awesome their snowman was turning out.

By 3:00 PM the snow had stopped falling and everything was melting. That didn’t matter. My Facebook feed was lousy with snow pictures, and everybody I knew took full advantage of the magical snow day. The next day, the only evidence in my neighborhood that the snow day even happened was this, the world’s saddest snowman.

World's Saddest Snowman

If we were having coffee, what would you tell me about your week? What was one pretty awesome thing that happened to you?

  1. Wow, such amazing pictures 🙂 I can’t believe it melted so fast, here in the UK snow hangs around as dangerous ice for days after a snow day. We’ve been fortunate to not have any snow for the entire winter, it’s usually a big deal here, not because it’s rare but apparently it’s “The wrong type of snow”, and the UK goes into chaos panic buying mode until it’s over. I love the idea of kids googling how to build a snowman, bless them!
    Great post, and blog!

    • Our snow didn’t really stick either. That’s just fine because we are unprepared when it comes to snow and ice.

I hope this week will be better for you. I admire that you are working on changing the mind of employers as it concerns workers with disabilities. It’s sad that needs to happen, but good for you for being the one who does it. I’m sure it is frustrating sometimes, but thanks for doing it.

    • It sure was the best kind of snow. We can’t take too much more than that because we just aren’t prepared for snow. Hurricane weather & Tornadoes? Yes. Snow? Nope. Might as well put us under the Dome.

    • Me too. When we are at 239552950º with 110% humidity, I will be whining like a child- just like I whine when the temperature gets close freezing unless there’s real snow.

It gets too hot to live without AC.

  2. haha…Oh that dress! I’ve spent a lot of time over the past few days laughing about people’s reactions to that dress.

We didn’t get any snow down here—-it’s really, really unusual for it to hit the coastal parts, New Orleans and the MS/AL Gulf. I’m ok with that, though—no one here knows how to drive in the snow, and we don’t really have the coats for it. lol

    • That dress took on a life of its own. It was everywhere!

None of us can drive in the snow or ice. There were so many wrecks. We joke the city shuts down when there’s ice/snow. But we have to since we just don’t know any better.

  3. Love the pictures! And the fact that those boys Googled how to build a snowman. This is hilarious! Up here in Toronto today is supposed to be the start of minus single digits. Though it’s still -12C right now, it is supposed to go up to a balmy -4C! I am super excited for that.

    • You are super excited about -4C? Egads! I hope you guys warm up soon.

I thought it was funny they Googled how to build a snowman too. I was proud they were being resourceful though. 🙂

  4. I bet those kids would love to experience a snowmobile ride. Up here yesterday, our temp warmed by a whole 29 degrees! Of course that landed the thermometer at 16.
    Thanks for the coffee.
