Student/Me: Hypothesis

keep-calm-and-test-your-hypothesis-3

Setting: My classroom during science class

Me: What is the difference between a prediction and a hypothesis?

Student: Hypothesis… First you guess then you tess- Get it? Test/tess… hahaha

Other Students: Laugh and clap approvingly

Me: Hahaha. Too funny! Good job!

I got his little joke. I was secretly really mad at him because I didn’t think of it first. I’d been teaching elementary science for over 10 years, and I’d never thought of that brilliant saying?! Unacceptable!

It should have been me!!

I may have been bitter at my precious 9 year old student for like 30 seconds, but I quickly got over it. Hypothesis… First you guess then you test- It was his thing, but it’s our thing now.

Note: I put the student’s quote on poster board and hung it up in my class. Then, hanging kids’ cool quotes became a thing in my classroom. It also encouraged kids to constantly try to come up with clever quotes. That really wasn’t my intention, but it resulted in a bunch of hilarious nonsense and awesome sayings.

  1. Love it when they come up with these things! Glad that he’s willing to share it with you. I bet you’ll always remember him as the brilliant 9 yr. old to come up with this clever saying.

    • I will. He was/is a super, sweet kid. I actually put his quote on a poster board and hung it up. Then, hanging up kids’ cool quotes became a thing. I guess that is another thing he taught me. I need to add that to the post. 🙂
